Why is dancing important in your life?
Dancing focuses my creative energies in a way that helps me to learn more about myself…
When did you know, you wanted more than a couple of lessons?
By maybe the third lesson, I wanted to know more than I had come in to learn. I started out wanting to learn the Swing to go out with some friends, but then discovered Waltz and Tango and was far more interested in them.
Tell us about the most fun you have had at a dance lesson or dance event?
Well, I love every lesson because each one brings a new understanding or epiphany in my technique… and events remind me that I’m not the only one crazy about dance. I remember the first Showcase I went to and realized I wasn’t alone. That this wasn’t just some silly thing I was feeling a little guilty about indulging in. It was a true passion held by many and duly celebrated!
What is your favorite dance and why?
I think, deep down, the Waltz is my favorite dance because it can be anything. Joyful, grieving, longing, reuniting… But mostly because no matter what emotion the music conveys, it is undeniably REAL.
Who Inspires you and why?
My Teachers inspire me. Because I catch glimpses, often throughout the week, of them working on their own dancing, learning from one another and seeking further instruction to help their students grow. Their level of love and commitment to their art is noble and I’m always inspired seeing it.
Your message to others who are still “thinking” about taking lessons?
If you have ever loved a style of music or sang or played a few bits on an instrument… you will love to dance. There is nothing like making your own body a part of a rhythm and letting the music be expressed through you. It’s fantastic!
